Webhosting in general

Webhosting means, that you get the selected pack, with freely usable web space connected to the World Wide Web from a server. The dynamic engines uploaded to the web space might need different providers; therefore it’s useful to think ahead. To the web space we can connect through different admin panels, which can greatly affect the different opportunities. Some web space providers sometimes differentiate between the dynamic and their static services.

Availability

In the last period of time we had most of the problems with our provider’s availability, this is another reason why we decided to start our own server. Provider’s tend to give away more accessibility, then they can actually cope with. Our last provider was doing fine for the first half year, and then they have expanded throughout the country, which their software and hardware could not cope with. At the last quarter of the year, one website was shutting down after another, which has caused a large loss and extra work for us. Also our trust were slowly destroyed with our partners, because of the constant shut downs. Of course some companies are not using their web space properly and by the time they shut down they could have already caused a lot of problems. We hope that it won’t be the same with our services.

Of course one other matter to do with availability is whether you are able to contact the service provider or not. Unfortunately we had many bad experiences. There are companies who do not even give away a phone number. Our last provider had a phone number available, of course only available on working days, during work times, but for phone calls the answer always was to send an e-mail, which was never replied to. We cannot provide 24 hour availability either, but our last 10 years spent in the computing market, has shown that our customers are satisfied.

Data security

Data security can be split into two major parts. Firstly the type of hard drives used in the server and its configurations. Lastly the server’s physical placement. Most server hosting provider’s costs are greatly affected by the power supply found in the server. By doing this, they want to encourage people to use as small power supply as possible. Unfortunately, without a great power supply, it is hard to create a good performance. So we decided that we will spend money on a Dell Poweredge 2900 server, which has a quad core Xeon processor, 2x930 W redundant power supply, which is capable of transferring data  500MB/s and we use 15000 rpm SAS HDDs. These configurations ensure that if the power supply or a HHD becomes damaged, the server will still be running.

And as for the safety of the server, we have placed it at one of the biggest server room, which provides great bandwidth and the server is watched by security 24/7.

Administration panel

The user’s abilities on a website are greatly limited by the admin panel given from the service provider. Throughout our work we were able to try out many different admin panels. There are free alternatives; however these have very small amounts of capabilities and for some small settings you have to seek the provider. To avoid this we have decided to buy the rather expensive ISPmanager software, which was the best one. We can set the software to run the website on schedule, fully controlled settings of an automatic save, creation and control of databases, forward email accounts and finally DNS settings.
